Merchant Navy life starts with hard ship in three different categories,

Deck department, Engine department and Catering department.

Deck department consists of Deck Cadet, junior most rank as a trainer joins onboard merchant ships. On completion of deck cadet training onboard he/she goes for upper exams to climb up first step of the ladder. On completion of successful examination he/she gets certificate of competence as Second Officer.

First rank onboard he/she sails as Third Officer, working hours during navigation watches are 0800hrs to1200 hrs in morning & 2000hrs to 2400hrs night hours. He/She is responsible for maintaining ship’s life saving & fire fighting equipments. Additionally he/she may be assigned port paper job required for merchant ship inward and outward clearance.

Depending on his/her rank experience he/she is promoted to next step of the ladder as Second Officer.

Second Officer is also called as Navigating Officer. Working hours during navigation watches are 2400hrs to 0400 hrs in morning & 1200hrs to 1600hrs afternoon hours. He/She is responsible for ship’s Navigational equipments, Navigational charts & Navigational publications. Additionally he/she may be assigned medical officer job. He/She maintains ships medical chest and gives first aid assistance to any crew member gets sick onboard merchant ship.

On completion of minimum sea time criteria he/she is applicable to climb higher step of the ladder to next rank as Chief Officer.

To climb next rank as Chief Officer he/she has to go through Marine College and Maritime examinations. On completion of successful examination he/she gets certificate of competence as Chief Officer. Chief Officer is also called as First Officer or cargo Officer. Working hours during navigation watches are 0400hrs to 0800 hrs in morning & 0800hrs to 1200hrs afternoon hours.

He/She is responsible for ship’s maintenance, running of ship as operational leader. Training junior Officers & crew onboard. Chief Officer is also called Cargo officer for playing important role in monitoring loading/Unloading & in transit cargo onboard merchant ship.

On completion of minimum sea time criteria he/she is applicable to climb higher step of the ladder to next rank as Master Mariner. To climb next rank as Master Mariner he/she has to go through marine college and maritime exams. On completion of successful examination he/she gets certificate of competence as Master Mariner.

Finally he/she rides the ladder top step as Captain of Merchant ship. Master is responsible for navigating the vessel smoothly through different colors of the sea from one destination to the final destination of call.

Assisting is team mates of different departments Deck, Engine & Catering. Following different rules and regulations of different countries Master Mariners moves the merchant ship trades between different parts of the world. Countries economics moves and small to large products arrives our homes & markets without realizing the efforts of seafarer’s scarifying their family life & away from shore life. Master Mariner first opportunity starts settling ashore with various options. Working for shipping industry or starting his own ventures.
