A few Technical Updates

These would be of interest not only to the engineering fraternity but to all others too.
Reason being that fuel efficiency and fuel quality is a global concern for safer seas and safer environment as also to safety at sea!
Having Bunkered once with fuel from the port of Brandisi, Italy we pushed our nose out of the straits of Gibraltar, bound for the US in a winter voyage.
The quality of fuel was so bad that the scavenge spaces became choked with carbon and the turbocharger started to race!!
In the middle of a raging North Atlantic storm the Main Engine had to be stopped; Where are those people I now wonder, who entered the scavenge spaces in temperatures of over 48 Celsius , with crow bars to remove the carbon deposits ! We virtually had a coal mine in the scavenge spaces!!!
The Chief Engineer informed that it would take at least 6 hours;
The undersigned actually knelled down and prayed to dear Nicholas that my ship gets a reprieve from the weather for those 6 hours!!
BELIEVE IT OR NOT, IT HAPPENED!!!
THE WINDS DIED DOWN, THE SUN CAME OUT, AND THE JOB GOT DONE!!
WE SET SAIL AGAIN AND THE ATLANTIC FURY REMAINED WITH US FOR THE NEXT TEN DAYS.
From that day on wards, 31 years ago, I have always believed that safety at sea also lies in the quality of fuel.
